Impact

Project activities will contribute to the fight against AMR arising from farmed animal production. More specifically they will develop options for reducing AMU in farming. ROADMAP will meet the desired impacts through a multi-actor approach, with an interdisciplinary consortium comprised of researchers from different areas (economics, social, animal and veterinary sciences), as well as advisors and consultants from animal health professionals’ and stakeholders’ organisations and decision-makers at national, European and international levels.

GLOBAL IMPACT

“Contribute to the fight against AMR arising from farmed animal production” and to a global reduction of AMU and its impact on environment, animal health and public health (One Health approach)"

By identifying the main AMU drivers and studying current practices in different contexts, ROADMAP contributes to foster transitions towards prudent AMU through a rethinking of antimicrobial decision-systems in the management of animal production. In particular, ROADMAP contributes to:
  • the protection of animal health and welfare through improved animal health prevention and control;
  • the protection of human health through the preservation of the antibiotic arsenal, a better control of the spread of resistant bacteria and improvement of food safety and food security and;
  • the protection of the environment by a better control of the spread of resistant bacteria (through farm waste in particular).
Impact for farmers
"Provide roadmaps and scenarios for transition towards prudent use, enhance capacities of farmers for innovation and AMU change"

From different national case-studies, ROADMAP identifies the best strategies to bring efficient solutions for farmers’ willingness and capabilities to use AMs prudently. The project pays particular attention to cultural contexts, sociotechnical and socioeconomic dimensions of farming systems and the local practices and knowledge related to animal health. Specific dissemination and communication tools will be adapted to the farmer audience: e.g., video-based approaches used as deliberative tool, enabling experience-sharing between farmers; testimonies of change will help other farmers to envisage their own transition.

Impact for veterinarians
Picture
"Provide new tools for preventive approach of animal health, and new professional and business models for veterinary practices"

ROADMAP develops preventive animal health approaches for the veterinary profession by providing guidelines for prudent prescription of AMs and improved use of alternatives. ROADMAP provides key points for successful strategies of changing veterinary professional and business model towards veterinary practices that are less dependent on antibiotic sales thanks to a diversification of expertise and their source of incomes, in particular a stronger offer of advisory services. The evolution of veterinary businesses is a major concern of the profession throughout Europe and ROADMAP will closely interact with professional organizations at national and EU level to foster transition towards professional and business models renewing the role of veterinarians on farms and strengthen the development of preventive approaches of animal health.
Impact for public authorities
"Propose policy measures for harmonizing AMU practices across Europe, and homogenize AMU reduction trends"

By assessing and comparing strategies implemented in different countries and sectors, in particular by evaluating the effect of different regulatory systems on AMU change, ROADMAP contributes to the harmonization of European regulation regarding AMs and of international veterinary drugs schemes and regulations. Communication and knowledge exchange will be held with public authorities and non-governmental organizations, in particular about potential policy mechanisms and funding instruments for supporting research and innovation and antimicrobial stewardship.

Impact for academia
Picture
"Promote AMR and AMU research networks at national & international levels"

By developing cutting edge innovative theoretical and methodological approaches that have never been applied to the issue of AMU, ROADMAP contributes to the development of the AMU and AMR research field. ROADMAP strengthens interdisciplinary research networks on AMR and AMU at national and international level by facilitating collaboration, knowledge exchange and dissemination of scientific results with other international initiatives.
Impact for all actors
"Raising awareness of animal health professionals and stakeholders, and large end-user community"

The project impact is amplified through permanent communication with a network of stakeholders. The stakeholder community will be used as multiplier for ensuring new knowledge dissemination about how to foster transitions towards prudent AMU. Participative events and consultation will be organized throughout the project both at national and international levels. Scientific articles, press releases, leaflets and videos based on ROADMAP’s results and outcomes will be distributed through relevant media channels and networks.

IMPACT FOR STAKEHOLDERS
Picture
“Propose new contractual instruments and incentives to engage animal health professionals and stakeholders in a shared process of reducing AMU “

Throughout the mapping and analysis of AMs decision-systems ROADMAP provides an assessment of how the food and drug supply chains influence AMU. The project identifies critical points for change and suggests several instruments and incentives, adapted to a variety of contexts and industries, which help stakeholders to change their behaviours and adapt their marketing and economic strategies in order to reduce AMU.
